The Cogs Of Differentiation

In our textbook, "Fulfilling the Promise," it talks about the fact that there are 4 student traits to take into consideration to ensure effective and efficient learning, which are:
  1. Readiness: Students knowledge and understanding.
  2. Interest: Those topics or pursuits that evoke curiosity and passion in a learner.
  3. Learning Profile: How a student learns best.
  4. Affect: How students feel about themselves, their work, and the classroom as a whole.
The author also talks about, The Cogs 3 of Differentiation:
  1. The Student Seeks: purpose, challenge, affirmation, power, and contribution
  2. The Teacher Responds: investment, persistence, invitation, opportunity, and reflection
  3. Curriculum and Instruction are the Vehicle: scaffolded, important, focused, engaging, and demanding
It is very important that all 3 of these cogs are working together. We don't want one cog to be spinning and spinning (getting most of the attention, or doing most of the work) and the rest are not moving. All 3 work together. This makes so much sense to me. There are three elements to a classroom... student, teacher, and what we are learning... This is just an explanation of the 3 components, written in a way that makes so much more sense. A-Ha moment for sure!
