About a week ago, I read an article called, "Different Learners, Different Lessons" written by, Carol Ann Tomlinson. It was a very informative article that made a lot of sense to me. One statement that she made really stood out, and made perfect sense to me. She basically said that we are still in a "one room schoolhouse." The students in our classroom are all in the same grade, but all of our students have different needs. Thus.... the need for differentiation! This is brilliant. It was like an "A-Ha" moment for me. I may not have to look at different core for each of my students, but I may need to teach them all in different ways, and that is ok because it is do-able.
She also talks about how teachers need to be ready to engage students with different learning modalities:
- Appeal to different interests
- Varied rates of instruction
- Varied degrees of complexity
- Ensure that students are only competing against themselves
Nice posting... with your voice and real reflection! 5 pts.
